Life is better Out Doors – Reasons to get outside this Summer Season
Improve your Wellness by getting outside, A8 Warriors!
Summer is here and there’s no better time to enrich your life, mood, and health – and it’s as easy as getting ourselves outside.
Research shows that on average we spend 87% of our day indoors and 6% in vehicles – that’s 93% of our lives spent indoors!
There’s a number of reasons why spending 93% of our time indoors is harmful for our health – physically, mentally, and emotionally! We should strive to get outdoors as much as we can, even if the weather isn’t perfect.
Reasons to get outdoors:
- Hello Sunshine & Vitamin D – the sun supplies us with best source of Vitamin D and nearly 85% of us DO NOT get enough Vitamin D! Getting enough is essential to maintaining a healthy immune system. Those who don’t get enough Vitamin D are more likely to suffer from osteoporosis, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. Getting enough sunlight has also been linked with the prevention of diabetes, autoimmune disorders, multiple sclerosis, and heart disease. As always, it’s better to get Vitamin D from natural sources- so get outside and soak up that beautiful and beneficial Vitamin D (as always, in moderation).
- Better Sleep – Our sleep patterns are regulated by an internal body clock called the circadian rhythm. Our circadian rhythms are naturally tied to the sun’s schedule. Spending too much time inside – away from natural light and with increased exposure to artificial light can alter our circadian rhythms, ultimately disrupting our sleep patterns. Strive to RISE and SHINE: Early morning exposure to sunlight has been shown to help recalibrate these sleep cycles. A few consecutive days outside will help reset our body’s natural rhythm and enriching our quality and quantity of sleep.
- Spring in your step – Exercising outdoors has multiple benefits – mentally, physically, and emotionally – it can improve your thought process and mood in just a matter of minutes! In addition to boosting your mood, outdoor exercise can be more challenging, leading to greater physical strength and endurance. Even a light walk has immense health benefits, especially contrasted with sitting-, which has been referred to as the smoking of our generation. Sitting too much results in impaired fat burning capacity, decreased bone density, increased blood pressure, and a shortened life span. Conversely, exercise can help prevent or improve heart disease, strokes, type II diabetes, obesity, back pain, osteoporosis, and a host of psychological disorders.
Do yourself a favor this Summer and get outside!
Include your family and friends and share the health benefits together.
You deserve to be happy, healthy, and well, Warriors!
